Home tile renovation project - how to protect aquarium?!

It seems like it would be easier and safer to move a 30 gallon for a while rather than trying to seal it

That's 300 lbs we're talking about here, Loach. I have had very bad luck moving tanks with fish in them. I always lose a few due to shock. I guess you could try, but my hood filter design leaves fish happy. You must not have seen ;)

Yes it's 300lbs when it is full. I never said to move the tank while it is full though. I guess you're right zorro. I have never seen your hood/filter design.

I know... I'm joking! Scroll up for the design.

When I moved my 29 upstairs, I filled two 5 gallon buckets with tank water, left 5 in the tank and then put the fish in one of the buckets. My dad assisted me in carrying the tank upstairs. Afterwards, I filled the tank with one 5 gallon, put the fish back in, added that five gallons they were chilling in... then filled the rest of the way with new water. It wasn't too bad.. The stair climb was pretty harsh though. I think the filter idea Zorro has going on would be WAAAYY less stressful though xD

+1 for moving the tank to a different room... not worth taking the chance with anything getting into the water.

I thought about doing a version of Jemi's idea by buying a cheap 10 gallon aquarium to set up in a non-affected room. I could use the current tank's water pulled from weekly cleaning to fill, letting it run while we pack things up, then relocate the fish to the smaller tank before demolition day. I'd really like to paint the area behind the tank anyway. It would be a very crowded tank though: 3 khulis, 2 tetras, 4 swords, 2 plecs, 3 zebra danios and several nerite snails. Eek!

I'm sorry to say, but using old water won't cycle a tank instantly. With all of those fish, you would have ammonia spikes so fast it would shock the heck out of your fish. That is a very dangerous move. Taking them out for a few minutes while you drain and move the tank like Jemi said would be fine. It will probably be stressful to all involved, but better than a new, smaller un-cycled tank with all those fish in it.

^ This. You'd need the tank water and well established filtration for that to work.
