I am still working on restocking my 125 gallon tank. I came across Honduran Red Points in the classified section and found them to be a beautiful fish. I have done some searches on them and came up with some results, but am wondering what I can keep with them.

Current tank has 2 Severums and 2 Silver Dollars (going to be adding more, but the LFS doesn't have any right now).

My question is will the Honduran Red Points work with those fish and what can I add with them? I want a school of fish and some kind of activity on the bottom (maybe a pictus or some loaches). Also how many would you suggest, I am not really interested in breeding them.

Thanks

Think of HRP's as laid back Convict Cichlids. They aren't very aggressive and will do fine with your fish. But if you get males and females, plan on them breeding after they get settled in. Of course they're not as horny as regular Convicts and if they did breed you would most likely be able to sell they young to any fish store in the area.

Thanks. How many would you suggest? Also what about keeping them with Angel fish?

I don't want to make a purchase I am going to end up regreting. I love my severums but anything I want to get with them is usually recommended against even though I see other people doing it.

That's a big tank for those fish. Lots of space for territories. I would think you could try 2 or 3 for starters. I think they would be ok with Angel Fish too as long as they had lots of space and if the tank isn't overstocked.

If you want a pair of any cichlid species, best to start with 5-6 and let them sort themselves out. Trade off the extra's at the lfs if you don't want them all after a pair forms.

you could definitely fit 5-6 in there no problem. the bigger issue would be angels and severums - the severums can nip the angels fins and may bully them as they get larger. as you noted (other people do it!) i do keep sevs and angels together. when the sevs were smaller they nipped at the angels and i think it was a defensive mechanism. now they are all about the same size and the nipping has stopped. they'll be in separate tanks before the sevs outgrow the angels though.
breeding shouldn't be a problem as the other fish will probably eat the eggs and/or the fry.
