I went to the Petcetera today because a Honey Sunset Gourami caught my eye. Nice looking fish, and I thought a Gourami would be good for my tank since most of my other fish stay near the bottom. When I asked for the Gourami, the 2 employees asked "Do you have a gourami tank?" I replied that I did not and then they went on to tell me that Gouramis are very aggresive and should only be kept with other aggresive fish like Cichlids and other Gouramis.

This contradicted pretty much everything I've ever read, I've heard the odd thing about a certain species of Gouramis being aggresive or that they might exibit some conspecific aggression, but nothing like this. In fact I think I specifically heard that Honey Gouramis were especially peaceful.

So who is crazy, me or them?

For the record the tank currenty has:
Sunset Platy
Endler
Neon Tetra
Bolivian Rams
Julii Cories

I'm pretty sure Honey Sunset Gouramis are peaceful... perfect additions to community tanks.

Tell the guys to **** off.

Mine's never been especially aggressive enough to leave marks. It does poke at other fish, and the betta tends to get a bit uppity, but it's never killed anyone.

I have a honey sunset in my peaceful community tank. It eats from my fingers and is my favorite fish! I have heard that they are one of the peaceful types of gourami, provided they are the only gourami in the tank. I started with two and one got bullied by the other and a bosemani rainbow. It died and now the other is doing well. The bosemani and the gourami kind of take turns being boss, but generally they get along great. I hope this helps!

Go with one. A "Honey Sunset" Gourami is a Male DG color variant. Colisa Lalia, I believe. They will be aggressive towards their own kind and putting them in a "Gourami tank" is possibly the worst advice I've ever read.

Thanks everyone for the quick replies. I was pretty sure they were clueless so I bought it anyways and it's drip acclimating right now.

It was a pretty funny situation in the pet store, both of us looking at each other thinking "What a #$%@ing idiot!"

the employees at petstores are never very smart. every time i go to petsmart and ask about a fish i get a different story. thats why i had to donate fish back. family owned stores ftw!

Don't bash the stores or employees please. It's a matter of economics and training. There are some very knowledgeable folks even at the chains, but they usually don't stay long because of the pay. That pay is partially dictated by the prices WE look for. So, before you bash ask yourself... would you be willing to pay 20% more if the employees were morely highly trained and compensated?

That is why we ask here for advice instead of at the lfs lol. I had two honey gouramis in my last tank and they were by far the most peaceful fish in there. Actually they are quite timid and like to hide a lot so you probably won't see them too too much. They are total sweethearts! Go get em and good luck with them!
