Hornwort

Can it be anchored to something (driftwood)-like java fern can be- or does it have to be planted?

Hornwort has no roots, so it can't really be planted. You can bury it into the substrate to keep it down or tie it to something, but it will never anchor itself like java ferns or rooted plants will.

Hornwort is also a great floating plant.

Yeah, I've been "planting" it in the substrate just to keep it in check, but I realize I will likely be fighting with it as my fish dislodge it.

I suppose if you got a long enough piece you could wrap it around some thin driftwood and keep it attached with fishing line or something. Not sure how that would affect the growth/health of the parts under the wood.

I also find that when I plant my hornwort, it withers away and dies after a week or 2.

So I leave it floating until it gets mangled with other plants. Then it's happy to hang around, literally, on another plant.

well this driftwood is shaped funny (kinda like a horse lol) so I used some fishing line a gently tied it to the wood, it looks kind of cool

In my experience if you loop the strands around something to hold it in place, the shaded sections will quickly die off and you will have the wonderful mess of little dead hornwort leaves all over everything. I had a gallon zip lock bag worth in a 10 as shelter for fry and I ended up taking it all out, drying it, and throwing it all away. Never again for me its just too hard to clean up.

i wrap it around my filter intank. i have also tied it down and it grew fine.
