i just picked up one of these little guys as an impulse buy. now i'm kinda kicking myself because i don't know a thing about them. will they only eat live foods or can i have success with tablets and pellets? are they loners or do they enjoy having other horse-faced friends? should i add in some hiding spots or will he be fine just digging in the gravel?

i appreciate anything you want to add about them.

hard 2 buy as the burry themselves, realy cool had one for mounths .I dont see him eat but hes always out & about with the feeding ruccus of shrimps loaches & sharks. they must eat small leftovers that are left in crannys . they like their own company too like 3 ,& there are varients of this loach that look differant . but same type. the asian lfs couldn't catch them 4 me 2 buy & the one I got was by accident buying shrimps I was talking about them & asking if (he said I have one right here) they had them .So I automaticaly said Ile take him without looking .hes noticeably differant than the unseccesful purchase prior in the other lfs.

you might not have a horse head. the longnose loack looks alot like it. a good way to tell is the way they clean. horseheads beand their heads to clean gravel but longnose position their whole body to clean. horseheads need lots of cover. if you provide lots of safe hiding places he will not fill the need to bury itself that much or sometimes not at all. longnoses do not bury. horsheads are community non aggresive schoolers, longnoses are aggresive but I suspect they will school. I have a 5" horsehead and If you have first tank blue gravel then one at that size will actually take grave in its mout, tumble it, clean it ,and get food from inbetween it and deposite the gravel through its gills. mine is alone horsehead wise but he likes to school with 2 of my 3 weather loach. the 2 are about 4" each and the third one is 7" and built himself a burrow under a rock and is there all day with the exepton that his head and tail poke out because he is so massive

I've had a couple of horseface loaches for years, and they are fun. I have a sand substrate, so I hardly ever see them. They like to bury themselves in the sand, and they can move under the sand, like swimming through water. It's neat to watch them go under the sand. Many times, you can see just their eyes poking out above the sand, watching. Mine eat the same foods I feed my cories, sinking tablets, and shrimp pellets. Every once in a while I'll get to see one out of the sand completely, and once in a very long while I get to see both out. They keep the sand stirred up very well.

Very cool fish when you get to see them. I have two I think in my planted tank never really see the smallest one but the larger one will somtimes be seen.
