I just found some charcoal being sold at lowes. It was a big bag (32 or 64 oz i think) and was on sale for 50 cents so i went ahead and got it.

My question is (ahh the eternal question), is it safe for fish. the bag says 100% charcoal. all MSDS and other data sheets on it i can find says 100% charcoal created from various wood sources by heating in low oxygen environment (ie charcoal :) )

this is the same thing that the aquarium grade charcoal says. $12 for 12oz vs 50c for 64 oz. don't really mean anything if it kills fish though.

I think it was miracle gro brand, and unlike everyhing else in that line, it is not impregnated with fertilizer (come on .. fertilized perlite ...sheesh, whats next fertilized sand...)

wonder how i could test toxicity without actually killing fish. anybody know where i could find a mass spectrometer around here?

$12 for 12 oz?

Hmmm... I get Marineland Black Diamond online for $18 for 64 oz. If you use something like Purigen, you can regenerate the media and keep using it over and over again.

Personally, I wouldn't risk it. I think either using a chemical media that can be regenerated, or buing large quantities of aquarium activated carbon is the better way to go.

best of luck,
Asaint
