Hospital tank

I am keeping a few platys and snails in my Q tank to keep it cycled so it would be ready as soon as I need it. I can't have a better plan for emergencies, I can only be prepared for when they happen.

That's a great Q-tank article!

Thanks :thm:

Not to get too far off subject here, but if I do decide to keep a few fish in the 10gal most of the time, but knew the fish may be changing tanks a few times a year, would plattys be hearty enought to do ok in this scenario?

Thanks for the info - I vow to give something back as I continue to learn :)

Sure, about 3 or 4 Platys will be fine. If you keep enough hiding places, they will also replenish themselves! ;)

Thanks for all the input everyone. I have the article from the archives printed for my reference book that I am putting toghether. So many times I've come across situations that I knew that I saw the answer for (on the internet) but couldn't remember where I saw it !!

I am think about having a small tank for growing aquarium plants. Do you think I could have one tank double as a plant tank and a Q-tank?

Hi Jennypenny..... I am thinking that having a small plant tank double as your Q tank would probably not be a good thing. The medications that you would be putting in it for a sick fish could be harmful to your plants.

Well, I've got my Q-tank up and running now :) Thanks to everyone here for all the great info!

Now I'm just waiting to feel confortable about putting some bio-rings into it from my main tank which has had ich. There's 2 rainbows (bosemani & austrialian) at the store that I really, really want. After getting over a main-tank issue, I don't ever want to do anthing other than q-tank ALL new fish. However, I've only had 3 days with no visible ich (after treating a week total) so I'm not totally confortable moving media to the q-tank along with 2 new rainbows. The LFS told me I'd probably be fine, and kindly offered to give me something from her tank if I wanted. I appreciate her kind offer, but #1- I see annoince snails in her tanks #2- I'd feel more confortable using my own recently ich infected media than who knows what from the LFS tanks.

I considered using some other fish to cycle the "q", but then I'd have to wait for a full cycle before getting my precious rainbows. My best bet is to wait until I'm confortable moving some media.......I know I'm not the only that suffers from a lack of patience when it comes to getting new fishies! :)

I don't know if I can hold out much longer......
