Hot Dog fish food mix

There was an earlier post about someone feeding their cichlids Hot-dogs on a tight budget. Well I have decided to join and while in Sam's Club picked up a 40 pack of Bar-s Franks made of mechanically separated Chicken, pork, beef and a little paprika, for $5.38. I plan to use it as part of my fish normal food processor mix of fresh cooked oatmeal, ciclid flake, fresh spinach, cheery tomato's, and one crushed adult multi-vitamin into plastic 12oz tub that I dish out portions from. Today I just minced it up and they loved it as an occasional treat. I also do something similar for my cats using different ingredients but the Hot Dog also.

I have seen some good looking fish raised with hot dogs as a supplement to there diet..Most fish stores will scorn at the idea. The only thing good for Cichlids in there eyes are large disease infected feeder fish they sell at a high price to ya.Then they get the $ for medicating either the feeders or your fish..

mammal meat, IMO, is not part of a fish's diet. their systems are not designed to process it.

I dunno Beef heart sans the fat is used by many successful discus folks.

really tho..once meat is eaten it is broken down in to it's components..
and utilized the only question is how complex the food is compared to the digestive system of the animal in question

I would worry about preservatives being used. Other than that, probably great as a treat, but not a staple.

What about the flavor additives and preservatives? Besides being mammal meat as was said, which is hard on the digestive system, look at the fat content and sodium. I'm sure it's astronomical, particularly the sodium. All those "mechanically separated" meats are the first ingredient in anything from "potted meat product" to Slim Jims.

I'm sure you can find much better cheap foods to feed your fish...cheap cuts from the butcher, offal? May not be as convenient as perfect pink tubes of mixed meat laden with fat and salt, may be a little gelatinous and bloody and gross, but trust me is much better for the fish...and for you, if you choose to partake!

Hot dogs = evil...the cheaper they are the more likely to be so.

You are much better off feeding canned pink salmon or some other meat that is not so heavily processed, hot dogs pretty much take the cake in this regard.

Oscars and such tend to have more of a stomach of steel, but African cichlids have much more delicate digestive tracts, so be very careful and watch for signs of Malawi bloat if you are offering this to them with any kind of frequency.

Well I think there is a big difference if I was going to be feeding them the Hot Dogs only. The Hot dogs will be a protein and flavor additive to other far better fresh ingredients like the Oatmeal, spinach, tomato, Ken flake, and vitamins. Together they make up a completely different and wholesome food sort of like having a few slices of chicken in a large salad. More importantly the food will be blended in a food processor which will make digestion far easier then chucks. I am sure that fish food processors do the same thing using far worse proteins most would object to if they could see them, but I know exactly what is going into my fish food. I do the same thing with my cats and they love the food I make and they eat their greens and vitamins without ever knowing it.

Hamburgers are bad for humans as well but a burger made of 50% beef and 50% Soy is far better, same with whole milk that has allot of fat, non-fat is far better for you but both still have the same animal protein inside. Spam alone in a large portion is very bad but a thin slice in a Vegemite sandwich is far better for you and taste great.

Spam and Vegemite sandwiches? Blegh! Gunner, are you trying to make me bring up my chick'n and cheese enchiladas? They were mighty tasty, but not so sure the second time around ;)
