Has anyone tried to use different types of media in the Hot Mag. I rarely use carbon so it would be great to get some new ideas.

pot scrubbers, quilt batting, ceramic or plastic beads tied up in a cheesecloth sack or womans nylon hose, a rolled up sock, a wad of dental floss with no mint flavoring, ect.

I've dropped in media bags outside of the micron filter, and I've filled them w/ crushed shells (to raise kH), carbon, etc.

Whatever you need and can fit will work. BTW, the HOT Magnum has been an awesome alternative to canisters with a hose. You need less room than the large HOB filter it replaces, but it sure is quiet and moves a lot of water.

Considering using a mag w/ micron cart is one of the best bang for the buck mech filters and water polishers, I can never understand loading it with anything else. You can get even finer filtration if you put a couple of tablespoons of DE outside the micron before you close uo the filter. however this will shorten the time between cleanings.
