how about a sturgeon?

Honestly, I have no idea how to keep one. My guess would be to get a pond as big as you can, but no smaller than 8x12 and 4-5 foot deep. Keep it shaded with steep banks to prevent predation. A mesh cover would be good, too. A heater or aerator will prevent freezing but will be expensive to run long-term. Make a filter out of a stock tank, media, and pump and find a source of live food to feed the guy.

Lots of work, but it would be cool in the end. Go to some koi sites to get ideas how to build a pond and filter.

predation.... yeah.. errruughhh... we have bald eagles around here that could carry off a full adult sterlet! live food.... i could always get goldfish and gutload them...
 
eagles, bears, raccoons. you'll have your hands full with this one. I think they like eating molluscs and not fish, but I could be wrong.
 
no raccons, bears a plenty, but they generally don't eat fish other that the salmon. my main worry would be eagles. no, they don't eat mollusks, they eat fish. i've seen these guys carry away 3-4 foot long kings (king salmon.)
 
Honestly FC sturgeon is one of those fish that should really be left up to the profresionals at public aquariums. Could you house one? Yes with lots and lots of money to build a huge tank something like 3000+ gallons should sufice very well for keeping one of these guys in captivity. If you really want to know about proper husbandry for one then I suggest that you find a public aquarium that houses these fish and see what they recomend. Sturgeons are defineately migratory fish and as well. At least all of the sturgeon that I have read about. They often go from the ocean up diffrent rivers and from lake to lake so keeping them in anything that is not four times there size in leanght and 2 times in width just wouldnt be feasible imo. Have you looked around for other albino or white armoured catfish? Maybe there is something half the size of this guy
 
the website I went to said they are the only species of sturgeon that can be kept easily in home aquaria, and that they are easliy maintained in a tank of at least 180 gallons in size, and are best in outdoor ponds of similar size. they require good water flow and are intolerant of poor water conditions. they are FW fish 100%. it also says that they can live for 100 years and reach maturity between 3-7 years for males, 5-12 years for females. dispite all your discouragements, I will try one I will either get a nice, huge tank or build a pond.here are my info sites:http://www.aquariacentral.com/fishinfo/cold/sterlet.htm

I found it while searching. it must be from the original AC like 5 years ago. I guess i'll start it out in a 180G tank like it says, and upgrade if I feel he's outgrowing it, maybe make a pond.

Thats like old old school AC like 1997 AC. Ive been here since 2002 and have never seen any of that or that old logo!
 
how long as AC existed, anyway?
