How accurate are pump specs?

I have a ViaAqua 2600. Which should give me 400-500gph. Looking at the flow into my wet/dry, I am not convinced. I would suspect half of that.

I will try to do some objective test over the next several days.

I'm confused - you're pumping into your wet/dry? I hope not. What if the return pump craps out on you?

If you want to know how much it pumps, fill a 5 gallon bucket, or even better - 40 gallon drum(or fishtank for that matter. Any known volume will do. The bigger, the more accurate.), and time how long it takes to empty it. Should take 1/10th of an hour, or 6 mins to empty the drum at 400gph.

What sort of head height are you working with and what is the return diameter? Keep in mind the longer and higher the head the lower your flow. I think its something like a typical 15-20% loss per foot for the first 5 feet or so depending upon how strong the pump is. Many pumps are given a max rating at a 0 foot head.

5 foot head height. 3/4" return.

The pump returns the water from the wet/dry to the tank.

I'll do some testing next time I do a significant water change.

I may have some additional restriction do to my return design.

Or maybe I'll just breakdown and buy the next size up pump. :-)
