How big do Ghost Shrimp get?

I have 5 ghost shrimp. Well they could be glass or grass shrimp too, so maybe that makes a difference. Anyway one of them I've had for months (got it at LFS) and its pushing 3 inches! The other 4 I caught at the lake and they are not quite 1 inch yet. The big one even looks a bit different than the smaller ones. Its clearer with definate black veins running through it, and it chases the other shrimp around. The smaller ones have brown veins and they are not quite as clear.

Any ideas here? I swear the big one is still growing! This mutant shrimp is starting to creep me out a bit. lol
 
Mine never get above an inch before they get eaten!
 
maybe your biggest one is not a ghost shrimp.

just pray that it is not a macrobrachium rosenbergii.

does it look at all like these? it probably doesnt, but if it does you should get rid of it. mine has eaten about $50 worth of fish. now it has its own tank.

yeah, the typical freshwater ghost shrimp (Palaemonetes paludosus) I've always had never get more than 1 1/4 inch (and they were definitely full-grown, lived for a year and a half). That's for the females, the males are a bit smaller and stay a little under an inch. I think you do have some other kind of shrimp, couldn't tell you what though. Try www.petshrimp.com, under Shrimp Varieties.

edit: I missed the part where you said you caught the shrimp at the lake. It might not be a pet shrimp variety at all then!

travis, thats one monster shrimp. those claws don't even look natural on it!

anyways i just got 3 amano shrimps last week, they should stay under an inch and a half i believe.

yeah, there are some gnarly looking pet shrimp (nevermind wild ones). I steer clear of things that can pinch me :) Although one of my ghosties did taste my arm with a tiny pinch!

Yes, amanos also stay much smaller than the shrimp Chickee is describing!
 
Ok, my bad. I probably screwed this whole post up. I said inches, but when I got out my ruler I see cm was probably a better term.

oh, good. I'm glad that site did help you after all. Yes, 3 in is very different from 3 cm! It's OK, we all make that slip-up.
