Im thinking of getting some cherry shrimp. But the only other tank that I have other than my 46 gallon(that has fish that will eat them) is a 1 gallon. Do you think they'd breed/be able to keep in there. It fairly heavily planted near the top with snails and minnows.

I could get rid of the minnows, but what im worried about is the space for them to live in... would they fight, die, be fine?

They would rapidly breed themselves out of a 1G. I went from 2.5 to 10 to 20 long in 6 months even while removing plenty through sales. I've found an equillibrium now, but it requires me rehoming 25 - 50 per week on average.

yes, thats why i have fish to eat them :]]

well... A fish

haha

I heard that ghost shrimp will have territorial disputes if they live in small spaces with large numbers. But i guess cherries are more docile

Cherries are more docile, but i honestly don't recommend less than 10g if you are intentionally breeding them. In an ideal world, a 20L would be best as they do reproduce readily. You can keep them in smaller for display, as 10 per g is the "rule" but they do better with more dilution.

The main problem with a tank that contains a small volume of water is that it takes diligent maintenance to keep the water healthy. Shrimp are extremely sensitive to toxins, such as ammonia, nitrates and nitrites. So if you keep shrimp in a small tank, there is a very narrow margin for error. If you slightly over feed, it could kill of your investment.

Then there's the fact that many dwarf species of shrimp reproduce quickly, and will rapidly over populate the tank.
I highly recommend sicking with 10g as the smallest sized tank for a shrimp colony.

i agree with msjinkzd...a 10gal minimum. i had mine in a 29gal and just moved them to a 20.

good luck with the breeding!

i would go with a min of 10 gal to start..... like the others have said.
