I want to keep weather loaches and some other fish(whatever I can mix with the loaches) and use our well water for water changes.
our ph is app. 8.4, can I do something to the water in the tank to reduce Ph, without having to buy a bottle of petstore chemical X?

I have some water conditioner to use for a while but I don't want to buy it constantly, if there is a different way.

you can use a couple of gallons of distilled or RO water. You can add peat extract to the water, you can use peat in your filter...C02 reactors also lower it.

there is no reason to mess with your pH. most fish are extremely adaptable to various water chemistries and loaches should have no problems with your pH. if it was above 9 or below 5 i would be worried, and not just for the fish but for you as well. otherwise it should be fine.

as for other things. . . . what size tank do you have in mind for the loaches? they get very large, they are very active at times and can jump out of tank that are too shallow, and they like to be in small groups - at least three. they are also a coldwater/temperate water fish, so they won't do too well in tropical temperatures long-term. good tankmates include goldfish (who need at least 20-30 gallons for one) and white cloud minnows.

I was hoping on using 20 gallon, if it will work. My goal is to have a snake-like fish like an eel or something - the weather loach is the smallest I could find. I wish I could get a 125g long and get the largest snake like fish I can find, alas, I only have 15 and 20g

if the 20g is too small, do you know of a different snake-like body shape fish that I could keep in it?

Wataugachicken, I like your avatar, Dali is cool, like your sig too. :)

Kuhli loaches which measure anywhere between 3" and 4". That's pretty much all the fishes that I know that have the eel-shaped body (including the weather loach).
