How do I build a pond?

I have a goldfish in a 10 gallon tank getting lonely and big, so I was wondering about buliding a pond in my garden in the summer. It would be very helpful if anyone with pond-buliding experience could let me know how to bulid the pond and the initial costs. It probably would need to be a rather deep pond because I live in eastern Massachusetts, and it gets pretty darn cold up here!
