I purchased a new cichlid and i really like it! The problem is i am not allowed to get another tank. Right now i have it in my main tank in a smaller tank with slits in the top to get water in and out from my main tank, basically a tank in a tank. Did i mention this is a baby african cichlid barely an inch. Anyway i just think he should have more room, i am thinking at least a gallon. If i were to get a 1 gallon pickle jar and put a screen in the the top of it would this be a good idea. Right now the cichlid is in i think its about one liter, but it has my 29gallon tank water running through it. I am just worried about the fact he might need more room to swim than he was given. If you guys think my idea from above is good and will work to protect my other cichlids from eating him, plus giving him more room than i will act quick to get it done within an hour of your answer. Or if there is another idea that i could use that is better than mine, by all means i would like to hear it.

Thank you for your time!

first- why did you get another right after one died, before you figured out waht killed it, and why did you get another even though you already have to many in your tank?
you should take him back or hes going to get ripped apart. the other fish have already claimed their territories, and they are probably bigger than he is.

i did figure out what killed him actually. I found out after removing him from the tank that he didn't gt fed it looked like very much at all. So my guess is the fact i just put the food in quickly in the morning before school that the other fish ate all the food and he never got any. Hence his very small belly! I actually feel really bad about it.

No you mis understand i want to put it in the jar but put a screen on top directly under the main filter so it will have filtration.
