How do I feed my nocturnal catfish?

Hello everyone,

I have had a SA bumblebee catfish for several weeks now and am curious to know the "best" technique for feeding him. It is a nocturnal fish living with three guppies and two mollies. It really doesn't come out much during the day. I think he was used to being fed flakes because he will swim up to the surface and look for food once the lights have been off for awhile.

I have been dropping shrimp pellets in after I have had the lights off for awhile, but want to make sure that he is getting enough food. What else should/ could I feed him and how can I be sure that my greedy livebearers aren't getting all of it?

Thanks,
~Matt :hi:

I also have the same catfish in with tetras in a 29 gal tank. They are quite accomplished at hiding. I'll go weeks without seeing him but when I do he isn't thin so I'm not concerned. Feeding late after the lights are out and the daytime fish are less active / "sleeping" is a safe bet that the food gets to the cat. Don't overcompensate and foul your tank. He's likely getting more food than you realize.

Thanks, g-mon!
I'll just keep dropping a few small chunks of pellet it there and checking on him once in awhile when I rearrange to siphon and such, and the once-weekly time I see him.

Anyone else have suggestions for other suitable foods?
Cheers,
~Matt

I had a pictus cat that was nocturnal and would hide under one of the ornaments in the tank. I dropped algae chips in for him periodically; he'd sniff them out, snatch 'em up and carry them off into his "cave". I've read that most catfish have a good sense of smell, but right now I have a cory cat who doesn't seem to have such a great one.
