How do I found out how much lighting I have?

I got a 55 gallon with a flourescent light that runs the whole length of the tank. I can't see any markings anywhere on it and when I turn the light on it is a more blue than white flourescent light. How can I tell what sort of lighting this is or should I just buy a bulb that I know what it is if I want to start planting? I mean there is a fair amount of light.

Also, can plants that require low light be in a tank with brighter light? Or do low light plants require only low light?

how long is it? max its 40watts......

a new bulb wont cut it.... it might look bright to you but plants need more light. best lighting would be to get some CF lighting from ahsupply.com. the 2x55 bright kits would be great.

Not to hijack the thread but I also have a 40 watt in my 55 gallon, what fixture would you guys reccomend from ahsupply for a standard 55?
