my tankwater has a yellowish tint and i was informed to run carbon - does that mean buy a carbon based filter? or is there another way because i didnt plan to run the carbon 24/7... thanks!

does that mean buy a carbon based filter?

Yes. What kinda filter do you have?

You shouldent have to 'buy' and carbon based filter. MOst filter cartrages come either with carbon pre packed in the cartrage(i cant spell) or the refills come with little carbon packets you can add if you want.

Why do you have a tint to your water? Do you have real driftwood?

You can use the prepackaged filter cartridges, or you can buy some carbon and put that in your filter in the media container, or a media bag.. My suggestion would be to run the carbon 24-7 until the water is clear, then run it as needed. Carbon gets "full" depending on what-how much "stuff" it is absorbing after about two weeks. After that it is useless..

What kind of filter do you have?

You can use the filter carterages that have the carbon already in them but in my opinion they are a waste of money. They do not have enough carbon in them to really make a difference and the carbon will become clogged and useless in no time. I would consider using a media bag and putting some activated carbon in it. Then you can either place it in the filter so the water can run through it or you can hang it in the tank near the filter or an airstone so the water will pass through it. This should clear the water in a day or two but I would still want to find out what may have caused the problem in the first place.

Related question: can you put additional carbon into HOB filters like the bio-wheel? The filter inside it has some, but has anyone tried just dumping additional carbon into the water compartment of the unit?

I have put some in a nylon sock in the past and stuffed it behind the filter. But lately I hear carbon is pointless after a week. I haven't cleaned or replaced my carbon in quite awhile and don't have any smells so i'm plannin to leave it alone awhile longer.

Additionally: I tried an experiment once with putting two filter bags into one filter slot and somehow managed to dump a crapload of carbon into the tank. I'm still fishing it out two months later. hehe, luckily most of it floats for awhile.

Actually my water developed a yellow tinge a few weeks ago.

I was trying to figure out why, all of a sudden, it had done so.

The only thing I could think of was that I had recently removed my carbon. I've since replaced it and sure enough, the water has cleared.
