Kriptic4~
A regular UGF draws water down through the gravel.
a R(everse)UGF, pushes water up through the gravel.
Both are intended to use the gravel as a "sort of filter"; a BIOLOGICAL filter. The idea is to keep relatively oxegynated water flowing over the gravel to maintain the nitrifying bacteria that grow on the surfaces of the gravel.
Neither one is supposed to be a Mechanical filter. I mean neither one is Supposed to trap dirt to take it out of the water.
The UGF, however happens to do a good job of sucking dirt(poop) down into the gravel. That's why with a UGF you have to vacuum very well on a regular basis.
Th RUGF, because it is getting the water to flow UP through the gravel, theoretically keeps the dirt more in suspension so the other filters can take it up.
sorry if this is off topic.
