It really depends on the salinity difference between the store and I. Typically I suggest drip for inverts but I've had success with the turkey baster adding water to a floating bag every 5 minutes when the salinity is close.

for salinity, I try to match the LFS where I'll be eventually getting my fish.

salinity and ph for that matter.

I drip everything I buy. I figure there is less chance of an "oops" with only adding a drip at a time versus risking dumping too much water in too quickly.

I actually drip all of my freshwater as well.

Here's a question:

How would you acclimate a fish you bought that was kept in RO water and you do not have RO water???

i usually float, but thats just cause im lazy. I drip occasionally but its kind of a pain.

What i typically do is float things purchased from a LFS and drip mail order live stock (the mail order livestock water is contaminated a lot easier due to the small amount of water, and long shipping time.)

Drip i think is better, as you can control how fast the drips go pretty easily, and you dont have to worry about it quite as much. I also find that sometimes it can be hard to get bags to float well, even with creating and air pocket (maybe im just dumb though).

I have actually made a few big mistakes in cases where the bag is floating ok, i walk out of the room and i come back and the fish is swimming around in the water (knocked the bag over by himself, or the water flow of the tank did) The fish usually end up fine, in fact i have never lost a fish due to poor acclimation, but its still better to acclimate good obviously.

My vote went towards floating, cause i do that more often, but i would recommend drip method.

oh and by the way... sorry for rambling on so much lol.

same thing, fish dont really care if the water is RO or not, its more the algae and the corals that it affects.

If you bought a coral in RO water, and you do not have RO water you would still acclimate the same as normal, doesnt matter much.

I have a question my self, i have seen that places recommend to only acclimate corals to the water temperature of the tank, and then release? Without any drip or anything, they say not to even adjust the coral to the water of the tank... is this right?

I have been told the same thing about corals. I have never really acclimated mine much, but my tank water has the same SG and Ph as the LFS I get them from.

It depends in the difference between my wp's and the lfs's.......:)

I drip everything.. Because its not only the SG that is an issue, it is all of the disolved minerals etc for me. Now maybe I'm being a little overly picky but I keep the critters in covered pail with the bag clipped to the side. That way they won't get stressed and can slowly acclimate to their new environment.
