How do you convince an 11yo boy glasses are cool??

After our yearly trip to the eye doctor today my son had to get glasses. He is 11 and really ticked off by this. I mean just really crushed he is going to have to wear them.

I have worn glasses or contacts since I was 7. Yep, you guessed it, he is blaming me for his poor eyesight. He picked out some really nice frames that looked just wonderful on him but has been pouting all night about it.

I have a week until we pick the glasses up to convince him that it's cool! I think just being able to see better may help, but he doesn't want anything else to make him feel different. He already has red hair and freckles that he hates (think Opie Taylor and you know what my son looks like...he is adorable!). He just doesn't want anything else to make him feel different. People constantly comment on his hair or freckles and he hates the attention it gets. But he is just too darn adorable and people can't help it :D

Any suggestions??? My hubby has perfect vision at 40 years old and never has worn glasses so Dad doesn't have much input to help.

did you think about contact lenses?

That wasn't really an option. He is one of these kids who is creeped out by eyes. You know if you touch your eyeball he wants to hurl. Strange really but his dad is just like that too. The very thought of contacts creeped him out. Plus he is only 11 (soon to be 12) and I just think it would be too much for him to handle. Perhaps some day he will go for them, but not anything he would even consider now.

Millions of kids before him suffered the harrasment when we first got our glasses. He will survive as we did. And yes, he will be teased a little the first few days at school but if he does not acknowledge it, it will fade quickly.

My boss and his wife both wear Coke bottle lenses since they were very young and all three of their kids 17, 15, and 14 all have 20/20 vision.

I used to think I could never touch my eyeball either but I was into sports so glass were an annoyance for me. The first week took me about 10-15 minutes per eye but I soon was a contact professional.

If you've got good insurance or a few extra grand laying around and the Dr approves there is always the LASIK option.

Children are strange. My wife and I both started wearing glasses when we were in 1st grade and our 11 year old daughter has 20/20 vision. My daughter wishes she had to wear glasses. She has fake ones with glass in them that she wears quite often because she likes the way they make her look smart.

Oh he will indeed survive. I just hate to see him have to go thru this. To us it's no big deal, to a kid it can feel like the end of the world. I suppose it will just make him a bit thicker skinned.

LASIK isn't an option until a child stops growing. Their eye grows and changes as they grow an until his primary growth spurt is over, it's not an option. When his eyes have matured...yep, we will do that for him.

Our 6 year old daughter was dissapointed she didn't get glasses this time. LOL. She is farsighted though and with every growth spurt her eyes get better but will eventually turn to nearsightedness. (The doctor explained it...hard for me to). Strange kids I got. I never worried about being teased. OH heck....I am and was so blind just seeing things for the first time was a thrill.

I heard a lot of horror stories about Lasik...Like I wear contacts and glasses now and I will not go for lasik..If you reasearch the dangers of lasik on the internet, I am pretty sure you will find a lot of information and you will consider not doing it for your child..

My daughter is 9 and she got glasses last year. At first she was really excited because my husband and I wear glasses, but now we can't get her to leave them on.

Since she's only a little near-sighted, we're letting her off this year. Next year, however, she's probably going to have to wear glasses so it's going to be a huge battle.

I would try to find a photo of a really hot model wearing glasses and give it to him. One way or another, it may help...
