how do you filter your planted tank?

thanks for the info folks I appreciate the help.
anyone have advice on cleaning. I have always vacumed the gravel . Now I am thinking about using sand as a substrate.I have a 29 and a 17 planted tanks & I cant keep my plants is the gravel they want to float. So I thought the sand may help keep them down. In those I have undergravel filters and HOB filters and usually do 25% water change weekly. I have only 60 watt new screw in type florecent bulbs in one and the florecent strip in the other. I was thinking I would like to find some better lighting for the 55 . I have been looking over the forum for lighting suggestions.

thanks again

well sand is fine. usally planted tank aren't vacumend and most people don't use undergravel filters because plant root get in them and clog them up.

U huse a canister on My 30g (marineland C-220) and HOb on my 4g(AC 20)

I use an ehiem 2217 clasic canister with sand substrate in my 75 planted tank. I do vacuum, but only for looks. I use a 1/2" vacuum tube just above the surface of the sand to pick up any little stuff. My filter gets cleaned once every 3 months at best ( could be done more often because it gets really dirty). I would definately not use the UGF unless it was reversed to bring the water up through the sand instead of down through it which would make it a RUGF. I don't like them either way but some in here do.

I have a Fluval 305 and 405 on my 55g.

One HUGE benefit to canister filters over HOB filters is there is much, much less evaporation!! I have tanks with both types - the ones with HOB filters sometimes lose an inch a week in the summer.

OK thats what I thought. Ugf gone, sand substrate, and hob filter . I dont filter my pond but I have 80% covered in plants and half of that is water Hiacynths wich are wonderful filters. water clear as it comes from the faucet and heathy koi. So this is how I will treat my tanks.
I love this forum !!! So much great knowledge.
Thanks again

Go with a Fluval 404, Eheim 2026 or a Rena XP3. Any of those other brand canisters id stay away from due to the difficultly of getting replacement parts if needed. I run a Eheim 2026 on my 36BF. Totally overfiltering but my tank is spotless.

If you don't want to use sand made for aquarium (ie: Tahitian Moon Sand) then Pool filter sand will work, unless of course you want a color. Darker colors like black show off your fish more. You may want to make the back of you tank black.
