I am in the middle of moving house, and so need to move all my tanks. I have a nice clean new 20 gallon tub to transport fish/plants in, have tested the water at the new place, have a plan of action etc.

But, one thing I can't find much about is how do you move substrate? I have about 100lb of sand that needs moving and not really sure how to move it? Is a trash bag the best / cheapest way to do so?

I have 3 tanks to move, 1 is a 29G with gravel, 1 is a 10G with gravel, and the other is a 55G with sand. Fingers crossed its not going to be that much of a headache.

I wouldn't used a trash bag they are lined with all kinds of pesticides, i don't think i would use even the food safe kind. What about any larger containers I have some really big ones that I got at the dollar store that would hold that much sand.

5 gallon buckets from Menards, Lowes or Home Depot.
keep it wet if you plan on setting up the tanks again soon.

I bet a 20 gal tote filled with wet sand is pretty dang heavy..

Dairy Queen used to give away 5 gallon buckets.. man I am old!

Going to keep it wet as only moving about a mile away and setting the tanks up as soon as I get there, they are pretty much the last thing left to move.

I keep thinking about switching to pool filter sand, but not sure I have time to find any before I need to move the tanks, and with so much going on at the moment changing from play to pool sand is lower down the list of things I need to do.

If you plan on replacing the substrate, I would do it now instead of waiting until you have it filled up and scaped. Be sure to seed the tank if you plan on this.
