so i brought my test kit today! i've tested the water, the ph, amonia and nitrite are all fine, but the nitrate is 100. It said in the little book of instructions that came with it that high nitrate causes stress to fish, which is definately true as my fish act stressed and skittish. So does anyone know any ways of reducing the level of nitrate?? Thanx!

If NO3 = 100pm then a 50% WC will take you down to 50ppm. Another 50% WC and you get 25ppm. One more takes you to 12.5ppm, which is good.

That's assuming that your tapwater has zero nitrate and doesn't take into account NO3 production in your tank, but you get the idea.

It also depends on on high your test kit reads the nitrate levels. If 100ppm is the max, your levels could very well be higher.

What I've been doing to really crash ammonia in my tank situation is to do a 75% waterchange. Then fill it up to 50% with freshwater. After that I drain it down to 75% again and refill fully. It does not harm my fish because they are used to 50% weekly waterchanges. In essense this does a 75% and a 50% change at once. If you stay on top of maintanance this would be an easy way to really crash nitrates.

i have tested the water from my mains in my house and the water from the drinking water tap. They all have extremley high levels of nitrate. Soo, now matter how many water changes i do it won't help. I am thinking of buying a product from my LFS that gets rid of nitrates in water. What do you think?

Go for it. Let us know the results. I would still do your water changes, though....as they remove much more than just nitrates.
