I do remember reading about someone breaking their tank while removing the rim. I think they blamed it on trying to go too quickly and putting too much torque on it.
I did realize after I de-rimmed, that my glass hood would no longer fit. So on my nice rimless tank, I now have a standard black lid, which half defeats the purpose. I would have just gone lidless, but it's on a piece of furniture which has a shelf just inches above it, and the moisture/humidity is far too much for that.
