How do you take off the black rims on tanks?

I de-rimmed a 140 gal Oceanic to make it easier to trim out in an in-wall installation. A Sawzall did the job quickly and easily with no scratches.

I just picked up a new 10g tank to try this out on, and the rim came off beautifully. So far, so good.

I did realize after I de-rimmed, that my glass hood would no longer fit. So on my nice rimless tank, I now have a standard black lid, which half defeats the purpose. I would have just gone lidless, but it's on a piece of furniture which has a shelf just inches above it, and the moisture/humidity is far too much for that.
