I can barely tell if one is a female or male. How do you tell? And when do you know when they'll be ready to breed?

females are larger and have a curved underbelly, males are smaller and have a flat under belly, in some species the females tend to show darker colors. As far as when they are mature easiest way to know is to watch for saddles on the female.

so it's safe to kinda say...males are a lot skinnier. lol. I cant tell on the saddle part cuz i guess they're too young to see. I know my female large one...at lesat i hope it is...is shaped like a V...and then tail goes back down.

It can take a couple of months for a shrimp population to kick off in breeding when they are in a new tank. Once breeding actually starts, you'll be able to see the eggs on the female when she carries them under her tail. In general though, females are bigger and fatter, males are smaller, less colorful, and more slender.

I'm glad you asked this question. I just set up a new shrimp tank, and didn't even consider asking! Good info to know.

Yup, keep us updated! How long ago did you get your shrimp? I'm interested to see if ours breed around the same time. I only have RCS and amanos (not breeding the amanos), but still.

i just recently got mine not long ago. I have so many different breeds, i feel like ill need that many different tanks. I mostly want to breed blue tigers, yellow shrimp (dont know why..they're not worth much)..and i'm thinkin about gettin some CRS and try to breed high grade ones. I odn't know much about them tho since i'm still new but yea..fingers crossing! =)
