How do you use a sponge filter???

Okay thanks guys, I tried just the tubing, and the pump stopped. I'll be getting a new one sometime by this tuesday. Thanks for your help! 
On the bottom of that pump is a rubber base. Remove the 4 screws that hold the rubber base and take a look inside. Tell me if you see a tiny nut that has come loose, typically it wil be stuck on the magnet.
