How do you use a sponge filter???

If that doesn't work, maybe a bigger air pump would work better cuz that looks a little small, what's the size?

I'll try that, and i'm not sure what size the pump is. My dad bought it a long time ago and he cant remember what size it is. It's an Elite, if that helps in any way.. lol

I agree with getting a more powerful air pump.
Just curious, what's the airline valve for? Also, I'd get a check valve if you haven't already.

I have a couple filters just like that. I agree that your pump might not be strong enough. If that's the case, it might work better if you get rid of the air stone. Just have the end of the airline tubing going down inside the middle of the tube. As the bubbles come up the tube, they pull water through the sponge. There is a hard plastic tube that attaches at the top of the filter. I cut mine down to half size. They were too tall and stuck out of the water.

You hook the air line right to the stem sticking out of the top of the sponge. You don't use an airstone at all.

That is a small sponge and the pump you have is fine, just not hooked up correctly.

That pump, if working properly, is fine. However, it is possible that the diaphram might have a crack in it, or a little nut inside of it has come loose. And yes, you can use an airstone inside the sponge filter, you don't need to, but it does cut down on noise a bit. That valve is fine as well, just make sure you don't have it closed to far.

Yeah i'm fixing to take the air stone out and try that. When I turn it on, it works fine for a few minutes, but then it's like the air pump gets over heated? and just stops working or something, idk. And the valve is so I can control the air flow, since i'm breeding bettas.

Sounds like your air pump MAY be the problem. Worht a shot getting rid of the airstone though.

The air pump is the problem. Try this. Put the airline tubing into the tank itself. No filter no airstone. Bet it pumps a few minutes and stops. Means you're pump is pretty much toast. I like the sponge filters myself. Just spend $15 or so and get a new pump.
