How does my brother do it?

yep. sum people are just plain irresponsible..... my friend used to have a tiger oscar in his 55 gallon. He only changed the water every six months, and somehow the fish were fine... but when he changed the water, boom! everything died. and yes, his tank is filthy and the gravel is coated with algea. his nitrate was 45 I think...... and ammonia was like 1ppm...... Ur brother's tank will not last long.

It is only a matter of time, and even if it is a long one, the fish will not live their expected lifetime.

Yeah I agree with everyone else. Btw, how can you be so sure that he has not had any losses? You said yourself he lives 6 hours away so you can't be too sure.

Plus I wouldn't be too hard on yourself, strive for a goal and you'll reach it with hard work. When I started fish keeping I was jealous of all my friends tanks because they all looked a lot nicer than mine. I kept at it, did my research, and started the correct way and by the end of the year, my fish were fat and happy and all my friends were envious of me instead since their fish die out after every few months. Yep feels good :D

I know he hasn't had any losses since setting up because he told he how he stocked it via phone a few weeks ago. I just went and visited him this weekend so I was there. What I meant by saying he is 6 hours away is that I just can't stop by and see how things progress from here.

My two tanks look nice now and are coming along. The plants are growing out, the fish are happy, the shrimp are breeding....it's all good! I do have a bit of an algae issue in one tank but it's pretty new still. I just clean the glass. I am definately not second guessing that I'm doing it wrong and I'd never stop doing water changes and such!

soon your brother will be coming to you for aquarium advice, when he sees your tank working out and looking healthy. heck, maybe when he kills these fish he'll give you his tanks.

Ah, THICK! That's the perfect word. He's definately thick about this. If he hadn't had what he calls "success" wtih his methods before, he wouldn't be so stubborn about it. He's not normally a stubborn guy about things he doesn't know much about.

I know exactly how you feel. My sister & brother in law had a 60 gallon years ago and somehow managed to keep all alive. they now have a 10 gallon and get this - are planning on putting in the same stock they had in the 60 cause they did great!; a pleco (do not care what type), an angel (?!?), a couple of kissing gouramis and prob some tetras and Lord knows what else. I tried to explain things to them and they insist that they will only grow to the size the tank allows. I told them that it was ridiculous and the fish will be stunted and will not be healthy and the response was "they are only fish" :mad2: AAHHH!!!! this from a guy that reads everything and is considered intelligent?!?!

He saw my 30 gallon tank, which by the way is slightly overstocked; and said "wow. you have lots more room in there for more fish"
I will keep trying but they are certain "they know what they are doing as they had a tank before"...........
