You hook one end of the airline tube to the sponge filter (usually a piece of plastic in the center of the sponge) and hook the other end to an air pump or power head.

ok i understand with a power head thats what i thought but i cant see in my head how it works with a air pump. wouldnt that just be blowing air out not sucking it in to clean the water? is there something i am missing when i look at the pics online?

My fry sponge filters have a small lift tube that draws on the sponge. A small air line from the air pump pushes air thru an airstone that is at the bottom of the lift tube. The air in the tube displaces water, and the effectively heavier water outside the tube pushes thru the sponge and up and out the tube in an effort to equalize pressure.
