how fast do cherry shrimp spawn?

I want some to! tell me, do they live long ? If I put them in my 20 gallon tank how many can I have, and what kind of fish can I put in with them? thanks

well i got a good deal on some more so i picked up another 70+ of them. you can put a lot in a 20 gal. they should be fine in that 29 gal of yours. never seen my angels go after mine.

wow 70 ! thats great, what do they cost? do you raise them for feeding to your other fish ? I would love to have a bunch, but worry they will get sucked into the filters. is my back filters safe for them?

I've read that they're supposed to live ~18 months.
What fish can go w/ them is a crap shoot. Your odds improve as you provide more cover for them - especially the juveniles. Impenetrable clumps of java moss, lush carpets of HC, riccia, M. quadrifolia etc. etc. can also help the juveniles survive (most fish will readily suck down a juvenile RCS if they spot it).

Use your gravel vacuum to catch them. Just get the siphon going into a bucket and suck them up. It will be like a tube water slide ride for them. LOL

That's how I plan on catching batches of 50 of my Cherry Shrimp at a time for trade in at my LFS.

Remember to buy new shrimp from time to time to keep the mix of genetics good enough so they do not become too inbred. You don't want to end up with Red-Neck Cherry Shrimp. LOL (I can make this joke since I live in the south. ;)) I plan to get about 5 new shrimp (along with store credit) from my LFS when I trade in my batch of 50.

GoldLenny,

You really don't need to purchase more Red Cherry shrimp to avoid inbreeding, tha's a common misconception. RCSs are inbred beyond comprehension ;). Many types of shrimp/fish/crayfish kept in aquariums around the world are hardly recognizable with their wild counterparts. Also, if you've got 'Super Reds' and you mix them with others you dilute their offspring.

There's also the danger of getting mixed types of shrimp, sold under a mislabled common name. The danger of this isn't as bad with RCS's, Neocardinia, asside from Red Cherry shrimp, there aren't many other species commonly sold in the US. However, if you keep any Cardina species, many of them interbreed with hopless abandon ;)

i have sponges on all my intakes so that helps. i hope they breed. my other fish shouldnt eat them. i just think they are cool. when i have too many ill figure out what to do with them.

When you figure out what to do with alllllll of the cherry shrimp you'll have, let me know! LOL! I originally bought cherry shrimp off a guy locally('bout 3 months ago) that was doing away with his aquariums. I got around 70 to start with. I THOUGHT I was going to be using them for feeders for my African clawed frogs(I usually get ghost shrimp, cheaper and bigger, but alas, can't seem to find them close anymore!), but they are smaller and not as brave(i.e., don't venture out of cover enough to get eaten!)so they aren't going to be feeders. I now have WELL over 200, probably closer to 300 and there seems to be no end in sight! Honestly, I can count over 250, and the amount that seem to be in my java moss is intense!! I have no clue what I'm going to do with all of them! I've never shipped anything live, don't really think I want to do that at all since the few times I've tried to have ghost shrimp mailed to me, EVERYONE of them have ended up DOA! Good luck, I pretty much guarantee you are going to have a slew of cherries!
