I have been toying with the idea of getting a couple of clown loaches. My LFS has some that are very small, maybe 1 1/2 inches. I have a 37 gallon and this would eventually probably be too small for them but I think my LFS will trade me if that happens. Anyway, how fast do they grow and would 2 be happy enough or 3 be better. Actually I know 3 would be better but would a pair be happy enough? I am trying not to be too crowded, either.

They grow fairly slowly. I think at least three is what I would get. There is no doubt a 37 gallon would be too small. If you are seriously planning on getting around a 125 gallon within the next year or so, then I think you'd be okay in purchasing about three of them. If you are only buying them to trade them in later, I would discourage you from doing so.
They grow slower than a lot of fish.
If you're planning on keeping them i'd say get a group of 5+. They do well in larger groups and it'll bring out their behaviour more (as opposed to only 3), not to mention they look better in large groups.

I got one in OCTober and it was maybe and inch. Now it is a little bigger than an inch. It is noticable to me, it's growth, but I doubt anyone else would say anything, maybe the hubsband, but I point things out to him quicker than he to me.

I would agree with this I had 5 in my 55 till they froze(another post) and the largest that ones I've ever saw were only 3-4" and they were $65. I now have another 4 and I'd get 4 more but Then again I'm gonna get a 225 before they need it. I had the first group for 6 months and they did grow but not very fast.spartan said:
