It all depends on how much water they are living in, how clean the water is, food availability, and temperature. For example: for ideal growth, you need clean, neutral pH water that is highly oxygenated, well-filtered and regularly changed. Food should be readily available in the form of staple pellets as well as aquatic vegetation and live food. Temperature should be in the low 70s for maximum growth.
Plan for a total of at least 16 inches for a comet, and at least 12 for a hardy fancy type like ryukin or watonai. A 200 gallon could happily accomodate 10 adult comets. If it is a 90 gallon, I wouldn't stock more than 5.
