how has fishkeeping saved you or helped you?

A few years ago a place I used to work at burned down. I found out while half watching the tv news as I was maintaining an aquarium in a nursing home in front of witnesses. An airtight alibi can be a real lifesaver!

my fish are calming, and entertaining at the same time. with being a single parent, my nights out are limited, and my social life is pretty dismal (not that i would trade my kiddo for a social life - i wouldn't have my life any way other than it is now). i find i can sit in front of my tanks at night and get lost in them, look up at the clock and hours have passed. i also have OCD, so getting a tank looking and running 'just right' is great for that!

I'm surprised that fishkeeping has helped people's OCD. I am fortunate enough to say that I am no longer suffering with the illness as of June last year, but I found that fishkeeping made my OCD worse, not better. I was constantly forced to perform actions not only due to the fear that some harm may come to myself or my family, but to my aquariums and fish too. I can certainly see how fishkeeping can benefit someone suffering with OCPD but not OCD; I'm glad that others are able to find the relief that fishkeeping provides that I was never able to.

Personally, fishkeeping provides me with a long-term interest which not only educates me but also stops me sitting in front of the computer or television for hours on end. Not quite as remarkable as some of the stories on here, but fishkeeping means I'm never bored!

With today's technology, airtight alibi's are a thing of the past when it comes to starting fires.

Are you sure? They only questioned me once so they obviously bought it!

My dh works 7 days a week, and also socializes a lot with friends, and I have limited working hours. So I'm home alone with the kids a lot, at least the younger one, with a lot of financial worries and little social life. My fish and pets (my kids too of course, but two are grown and I really need a little something more ;) ) give me entertainment and I don't know, a sense of purpose? Hard to explain. It's wonderful that we have all, or mostly, found a hobby that helps us. I think pets can be a calming influence.

They help me think my thoughts through better. Like when you're toting around a gf or someone, you tend to be a little more responsible in your thoughts and less...i can't think of the word.. I will say, fish tanks can be like a ball and chain, they're not like a dog where you just load'm up in the car and move on, it kind of got me by surprise how much they tie you down. - N

...impulsive, that's the word :) - N
