How horrible! My sick apple snail

they don't leave their shell but after dead a few days the rotting process, disconnects them from the shell and water current can bring them out or other snail/fish can pull at them or what not and they pull out,..
i had a few do this , briggs, and rams also,

What do they look like when out of the shell?
well kinda elongated triangle the coiled part decaying a bit and wetter than the foot is kinda gooy,.
the opercolum is just attached to the foot this is what usually is pulled to detach the rest,.

sorry for the grossness, but you asked,..
I didn't look long enough to see it in details. I saw the shell on the bottom and the bottom floating right above the shell. I saw the trainagle part and turned my head right away. I'm a chicken.

i rip my snails out of their shells when they die. they do look pretty gross but i use their shells to add calcium to the water

Sorry to hear that, Lorinda.:(

Here's an image of the muscle attached to the shell. Once it detaches, the snail eventually dies. It cannot live without its shell.

like lupin said, once that columellar muscle detaches from the shell, the snail is dead or dying very soon. That muscle is what keeps their lung from collapsing and without it, if they are not dead already, they will slowly suffocate :(

If he is still alive, please euthanize him, he is only suffering at this point.

I think he was dead for over 24 hours. He didn't move at all. Not even when I touched his foot. I wanted to give him some time just incase he was still alive so I don't think he suffered outside of his shell. I am 99% positive that he was dead yesterday and came out of the shell after he was dead for awhile. :(

sorry to hear that

How can you know if that muscle has detached from the shell? I would like to be able to know if my snail was in that condition so I could help her by euthanasia.

The soft body would have to fall out of the shell, Melody.

If it happens, you will know when you see it. The body is completely out of the shell.

well 1 of my 3 that were playing dead is dead not i looked in this morning and the operculum was off and laying in the graves so i picked up the snail and turned it over and the body fell out,. so she wasn't faking, just haden't gone yet,.. now the wait for the other 2, one seems to have moved and the other is still where it was,..:headshake2:
