I was doing a water change over the weekend when the black stuff in my Python started to let go. I know I was long overdue to clean it out but I hadn't thought much about it until then. I had heard of doing everything from bleaching to just doing nothing but I wanted this gunk out. I gave it some thought and was suprised by how well this actually worked so here goes.

*Do not attempt this unless you are willing to deal with the potential problem of having to cut and patch your Python hose due to a jamb. In other words don't blame me if it screws up.*

I measured out a piece of nylon string that was longer than the hose length. On the end of the string I tied a piece of cotton ball that was just small enough to fit in the hose. I hooked up the hose and the green Python sink attachment to the faucet. I filled my deep sink up with a few inches of water. I turned on the water and set the Python to suck. I then inserted the cotton ball in the end of the hose under water and away down the hose went the cotton ball and string. I had to feed in the string and the ball made it all the way to the end. I then reversed the flow and the string and cotton ball came back out. After a couple of times down the hose and back the gunk was gone and the hose looked almost new again.
