How I survived the storms.

im in oregon, and while the winds were bad, they werent washington bad.

everyone on my street except me and 3 neigbhors lost power for 2 days, i was up every hour checking the power, ready to sping in to my emergency tank procedures, because it kept fluttering so much.

though in the morning there was a massive tree branch in my back yard and several others that look much like what i want in my tank....i wonder if they would rot...

Man o man~ I'll be keeping my fingers crossed that they all come through without disease now. The fact they survived - especially the upside down angels is a testiment to your creating such great conditions that they could be healthy enough to weather that storm. You must be exhausted!
Keep us posted on your recovery!

Thanks for Posting Storm Info

Star Rider -I'm so glad you posted this thread. I live up the road from you, near Poulsbo in Kitsap County. I have my first fish tank (small 28 Gal), set up last October. Wouldn't you know it, but this has been the worst winter for outages in over a decade. We have had at least 5 since I got the tank started. Most of them have been just a couple of hours, but two have been more than 8 hours. The first long one was earlier in the week on Monday. It went out about noon. We have a hot water heater that is so well insulated that it holds the water hot for a couple of days. My instinct on Monday was to do a partial water change with water that was a little warmer to bring the temp up.

We have a generator, so I wasn't too worried. I can't get it started because it's a pull-start, but knew my husband could get it going. So when we lost power on Thursday, we had it going for several hours which kept all the tank equipment operating. However, on Friday, our generator which is 15 years old, conked out. By nightfall, I was starting to get worried, even though I had a fire going in the fireplace, which the aquarium is close enough to so that it benefits, it was still cooling down. I hesitated to do another water change, like I did last Monday, because I lost a platy on Tuesday and didn't know if it might be associated with our water system. I wondered if, when the power was out, something happened to the water company's filtration system or if somehow some bad chemicals had gotten in to it. (Ammonia, Nitrite and Nitrate tests were perfectly perfect, so that wasn't the problem).

Just as I was starting to decide to start trying things, the power came back on. All fish are alive and doing well, as of today. I gave them no food while the water was cooler, since I figured their systems would be slowed down. I have had a koi pond for 10 years, so have that experience.

At any rate, I think I'll get a manual air supply pump. I poured some water manually through the pump filter every 15 min or so to help keep the bacteria alive. I'll also remember the sleeping bag trick to slow down cooling. However, I certainly hope we can get the generator fixed, because that's the total solution. When it works, we have it wired through a gen transfer switch, into the household wiring, so all lights, outlets, and refrigeration work.

Let's just hope we don't keep having these storms! I think Mama Nature has dished out enough for us for the season.

Star Rider - what did you do about your filter media during that long outage? Presuming you are operating at least one canister filter, I understand that after a few hours, bacteria start to die off. Did you have to change out all the media? I'm curious, since out where I live, we have at least two power outages in winter.

Wow.... I see a generator in your future and mine....

Just a side story... This morning, a transformer popped in our neighborhood, and the power went out. Usually it takes about a few hours for them to swap one out, but this time was closer to four hours.

I have a fairly decent sized battery backup (1500va) on my computer, so I connected that to my tank's filter and heater, and the wife and I went out shopping for a few hours. Came back and about an hour later the power came back, the UPS was still running the tank during the whole period. I forgot to Check and see how much battery was left, but I'm betting I had another couple of hours left to run it. I've also been planning on getting a UPS for the tank, and any new tank I get as well, for these shorter outages.

But... I looked at generators at homedepot and now on eBay just to see what they are costing these days. I think we'll be getting one soon as well.

well I finally got some sleep..it was nice waking and finding the tanks all runnning..I check on my fish about every 2 hrs..a bit paranoid.

oh about the filters..I don't run cannisters..I have mostly either ac's or marineland bio filters. I removed some media(filter sponges and bio wheels) and floated them in the tanks. I'm monitoring the tanks just in case.

one wild angel looks a bit stressed but the others seem to be doing fine..

doing water changes in most of the tanks today 40-50% changes in all the ones I do today.

btw, for all the cat lovers..the boys still follow me around..ya gotta love ragdolls ;)
