Yes it will work, I have been using plastic sandwich containers weighed down with marbles to do this in my smaller tanks.
I have shrimp in the cpd tank and I'm kind of in the air about whether I am going to keep them together. I'm thinking of just letting the rcs and plecos have a planted 40 to themselves and then planting another 40 for the CPDs.
