how important to a tank is a

heaters mainly stabilize the temp in the tank.

drastic fluctuations can be harmful (stress the fish).

if you live in a climate in the tropics you may not have to use a heater very often.
even then it is probably stil a good idea to have a heater...IMHO

if you need a heater, get a printout from the internet with prces..the shop..I went to petsmart yesterday ..I took a printout of the stealth heater for $20.99 showed it to the cashier..she sold me the heater for 20.99..the price in the store....$36.99

It's the same temp everywhere in my tank, but the heaters will give different readings, although sometimes the coralife and liquid are the same they eventualy divert at higher and lower temps.

But for exampleit gets very hot in the day 90's and cold at night 50's

I keep a 100 watt stealth in my 20 gallon but when I wake up the temp is usualy at 76.5 (I believe that is what my heater is set to.

By the end of the day the thermometer is reading 80.5...

I don't have a room heater or air conditioning system.

My other tank fluctuates between 78 and 82

I have one tank with a heater and 2 without - the 2 at room temp. stay constant at 22C. The heater in the other rarely turns on; it's upstairs and room temp keeps it at 25C.

do they get direct sunlight? a tank in front of a window (whether right in front of it or on the wall across from one) that gets a fair amount of sunlight will have the water heat up from the sunlight.

just an idea ;)

fluctautions wil vary from tank to tank..depending on size of the tank, location(ie direct sunlight) etc.

it takes more energy to raise the temp in a larger tank..

Tank size does make a difference - I have an 18x10x10 (don't know what this is in gallons, prob 7ish), that gets seriously warm in summer. Speaking of which...does anyone know a good way of reducing temp without floating a bag of ice in the tank? It contains firebelly newts which can tolerate this, but also guppies, and I don't know if this will be safe with them (i bought them over the winter, so I haven't faced this problem yet). The tank generally remains stable at 22C
