Is there a place where I can find a picture and description of common "mixed african" cichlids? So far my eye is only keen in determining what lake a fish is from, I can't really tell different species yet...
Not really - if you see a mixed african tank, the fish in it are likely to be hybrids and therefore not really identifiable, especially if the shop assistant can't tell you what the species are. The thing is to be able to spot a mbuna versus a peacock/hap type, and as you say a malawi versus a tang or victorian. No reason not to buy the occasional hybrids if they are nice fish though.
Do hybrids have a different temper? I know that some of these fish were purchased at a "mixed cichlid" store, so I'm guessing that's what they are. They seem relatively peaceful, with only an occasional nip every now and then.
Not really, but it's tough to say as they can be a mix of just about anything. Most people don't like them because A) they want to know exactly what they're getting and B) they muddle up pure gene pools
