How long before ammonia spikes?

This mornings testing showed;

Ammonia >.25
Nitrites are down to 10
Nitrates are down to 10

Where does the Nitrate go, the algae? I thought the only way to get rid of nitrates was with a water change.

The nitrates are consumed by the bacteria in your rocks,sand and the algae. I'd do a water change and start adding my clean up crew.

Thanks again max. Cleaning crew went in today and seems to be doing well. 18 blue legs, 6 red legs, 3 trochus and 3 black turbo snails along with a sea cucumber. The cuke is sifting through the sand taking care of some of the brown algae bloom.

ammonia is still >.25
Nitrite is 5
Nitrate is 5

The bacteria is taking care of it's work rather quickly. Wish my FW tank was that good .

You'll have to feed the cuc probably after it eats up all the detritus. Just give it an algae pellet a week or something until your sand bed has sufficient time to build up schmutz. I'd keep an eye on the blue legs some of them are cool and some of them aren't. Make sure you have a bunch of extra snails laying around your snails will thank you.

What specifically should I watch the blue legs for? They seem to be going at the little bits of buildup on the rocks. I added some more turbos today and they haven't come off the substrate yet, they're going to town on the brown algae :) The cuc is just kinda loafing around not moving around a whole lot. You said have extra snails laying around, did you mean extra shells for the hermis?

The tank is really starting to come together. The sand bed is doing it's job. I can see pockets of nitrogen gas from the bacteria under the surface. I keep seeing more and more amphipods crawling around the rocks. More feather dusters are popping out and all the parameters are leveling out and starting to stabilize.

Thanks for all your help and advice :)

I added 3 blue/green chromis and an algae blenny on Sunday. All were eating within an hour after acclimation. Ammonia and Nitrite have been 0 since saturday and Nitrate is a little under 5. Most of the brown algae is gone now thanks to the turbo snails and my blenny.
