Hmmm...canuck just explained my point more efficiently than I did...I must be losing it..lol. Excellent points btw..and I agree with RTR's statement as well. It is very hard to really say where the "bulk" of the nitrifying bacteria dwell, as every tank is different...I just chose my words poorly. "Sufficient" bacteria is a much better choice of wording. This doesn't apply to "bare" tanks that many breeders, and discus owners prefer to keep. The lack of surface area within the main tank would be severely lacking to support any real bio-colony. In this case the filter would house "the bulk" of nitrifying bacteria.
