Wow! Great survival story!
I had a friend that had a large "common" pleco that climbed out of her tank & into the potted plant next to it many nights. She just picked him up & put him back in the tank. It was kind of a fish/keeper bonding thing after a while, he did it often. Some plecos breed that way, up onto the muddy bank to lay eggs/fertilize them.
