How long can aquarium bacteria survive?

Here's what I did recently when I brought my 10 gallon to college with me:

I bought a 5 gallon bucket. I drained the tank until there was only about 1" of water above the gravel line (after removing the fish of course). I put the fish in the 5 gallon bucket with about a triple dose of Ammo-Lock. I floated the sponges and wheel from my Bio-Wheel in the bucket and snapped on the lid (w/holes drilled in it). I wedged the bucket and the tank behind the front seats so that they couldn't move. The trip was about 3 1/2 hours with another hour or so once we arrived before the tank was completely set up.

Using this method, everyone arrived safely. The tank functioned beautifully immediately without so much as a mini-cycle. The fish all survived with no ill effects; they didn't even show signs of fin droopage. I had even left two shrimp in the tank during the trip, and they both survived as well. I was lucky because it was late August, and temperature control was not an issue. But even if it was, I would think a large bucket of water would be much easier to regulate than a bag for each fish.
