i put a piece in there today and i was wondering how long would it be safe in there?

My lil Pleco LOVES it!! and i know it will feed on it overnight. i just dont wanna hurt the PH and Ammonia levels.
thanks for any help!!

I left one in my tank for 4 days, but it was gone by the 4th so I am not sure how long, you definetly don't want it to rot in there....

I ussually leave in for up to a week and take leftovers out (if there's any left) on my weekly water change, my bristlenose, loaches and rainbow shark don't show much interest in cucumber until it's starting to look pretty brown.

ok cool!! so this would be a good supplement to a vacation feeder?? i will be going on vacation for a week and dont want it to hurt them.

thanks all!!! L.J. :)

yes I suppose so.....when I use them, they don't even turn brown after 4 days so you should be good....

Sub is wrong. HaHaHa, :p:

You dont want to be laving it for more than 24 hours. After that it just rots and can give you problems with ammoina. I would just leave it in there for 12 hours, and replace it if you want to.

As for your vacation, I hope you have a great time. But if its only for a week, your fish dont need to be feed. Just do a 50% water change before you leave and well, leave. In the wild fish may not eat for weeks at a time. You should have no problems, and you will have a nice clean tank when you get home.

When you feed cucumber or zachini do you just cut out some flesh, or include the skin.... I assume if you include skin you would want to wash very well, maybe blanch? (to avoid pesticides!)

That will kill bacteria but how do you know blanching will remove pesticides? A nice rinse under tap water will do just fine. Besides you're talking about one or two thin slices of vegitable to many many gallons of water. We generally measure in parts per million. Unless the cucumber are absolutely dripping with pesticide (which I hope would not be the case) then we'd be talking parts per billion or trillion. There's probably a higher concentration of pesticide already in the water straight from the tap.
