Owwww, poor little thing. I have two that are only an inch or so bigger.
I'm so happy that you are giving him a chance of a happy life
You must be a lovely person to be willing to help him even though he has had a rough start to life.
Is the missing gill flap a defect, or was it damaged? I once bought an angel with a defective gill flap (didn't look nearly as bad as the oscar though). It was the size of a quarter when I bought it and when I got him home and noticed the gill flap I wasn't sure how long he'd last. I had him for years and ended up giving him back to my lfs when he started chowing on all of my neon tetras.
yeah i hated seeing him in the tank with all the other oscars and the gill really made me feel bad. i am going to keep him for a few months until he (a) gets better or (b) gets too big for my tank and i have found someone that is willing to adopt him from me at that point.
i am not sure if its a defect or damage. in the months that i have worked at the store i have never seen an oscar come in with this type of thing. so dont know if its damaged.
