How long does a red empress take to color up?

This is my 2 year old. He sometimes doesn't display the black stripe when he want's to show his stuff but the Blue dolphin who is dominant in the tank usually starts chasing him and he goes back to the black stripe.

No, hes not the dominant fish in the tank. Hes probably the third rank in the tank under the Baenschi and the Frontosa.
