It takes bit. There are different levels of "live", but for bugs, worms, dusters and the like to start making it there home, it takes a few weeks. To become completely live, it takes months. The more diverse your tank is with critters and bacteria, the better.

Yeah and it depends on how porous it is too.Most live rock comes from the remains of corals and its now very dense.
