My mystery snail fell out of my 55g :( she cracked her shell in half and a chunk roughly 1.5" diameter broke off. I don't know what to do she is still alive. I put her back in the tank and she retreated into her "shell"

You might want to look in to repairing the shell. I know there are some recipes on how to create your own cast/filler for the shell but I don't know what they are off the top of my head.

Sorry I can't help more! Good luck!

I would repair it except the smaller part of her shell has sunken into the newer bigger part. Kinda hard to explain but she is still attached to both parts.

As I understand it, if the break is around the outer edge (around the opercula for instance, the lid looking thing) then it should be fine. If the break is anywhere else i.e. in the center of the shell's body or at end of the shell (around the spiral) then the snail's body will "collapse" causing it to die.

But keep asking around, I'm far from a snail expert. Try PMing msjinkzd, she'd definitely know the answer.

:( "collapse" sounds like a painful death... poor Jerry all she wanted to do is lay eggs!!! freaking had to take the extra step and fall out >.<

i have read about snail shells being patched with pieces of egg shell, but i'm sorry, my foggy noggin hasn't retained all the details.

if you could post a photo of the damage we could better assess if this is repairable or not.

Yeah, sure does sound painful. I've never kept pet snails. I do have plenty of rams horn, tadpole, & trumpet snails though. The only ones I really encourage are the trumpets. The others I don't mind terribly, but when I see their numbers starting to swell I'll periodically cull a few & the easiest way to do that is to break their shells. Being invertebrates, they have no skeleton to keep things intact, their shell serves that purpose. Once their shell has been compromised so is everything else, including their ability to breath properly, kind of like a collapsed lung I'd suppose.

But like I said before, I'm far from being an invert expert, their may very well be a way to repair shells. I'm just good at breaking them.

David, apple snails are pretty big, and that would be a messy (and painful for the snail!) job of crushing shells to euthanize them.

clove oil should work, and it is humane.

Oh I know. I'm not suggesting that the OP euthanize the apple snail by crushing it !

I'm just saying that I kill pest snails by breaking the shells & that as far as I know, a broken shell is pretty much a death sentence to a snail because it impairs their ability to breathe etc.

But being that I never kept pet snails I'm not familiar with repairing shells. Maybe there is something that can be done to save it. For the sake of the OP I hope there is.

To the OP, can you get a picture of the break? I have had a few snails crack their shells and be just fine. There are also all sorts of ways to mend a shell if it is on a mendable place. There is this thread about it: http://www.aquariacentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=186507

And I know there is another thread somewhere on AC where someone was even using nail polish and I THINK maybe glue to mend shells. Anyway...I hope you are able to fix the shell and that your Brigg makes it. Good luck to you. - Ash
